COMPARE
Both Printix and Microsoft Universal Print offer cloud-based print management. They can also work together -- many organisations use Printix as a feature layer on top of Universal Print infrastructure.
| Feature | Printix | Universal Print |
|---|---|---|

| Driver management | Cloud driver store, automated | Universal Print-ready printers or connectors |
| Scan/capture | Built-in with OCR | Not included |
| Remote printing | Built-in, no VPN | Cloud-routed by default |
| Non-Microsoft identity | Google, Okta, OneLogin | Entra ID only |

| Printer compatibility | Any printer (IPP, RAW, LPR) | Universal Print-ready or via connector |
The most significant difference is how print data travels. Printix routes print jobs directly to printers on the local network -- data never leaves the local environment. Universal Print routes jobs through the Microsoft cloud, which may be a consideration for organisations with strict data residency or sovereignty requirements.
Printix supports cross-platform printing including Mac, Chromebook, iOS, and Android alongside Windows. Universal Print primarily supports Windows 10/11 devices.
Organisations already invested in Microsoft 365 E3/E5 may have Universal Print included in their licensing. Printix can extend Universal Print with direct IP printing, broader platform support, and secure release workflows.
